The Bluesocket vWLAN controller software and management software run on Intel and IBM servers. This allows
an enterprise to run the controller software and management software on server, blade, and hypervisor platforms.
The controller supports up to 1,500 APs. If the controller fails, the WLAN continues to operate with the exception
that new users are not able to gain access to the WLAN.
The vWLAN system separates the control plane (in the controller) and the data plane (in the AP). Therefore, all
data-forwarding decisions are made in the AP. This architectural approach is important for branch-office
deployment because it does not require the deployment of a controller at the branch. This architecture also
minimizes the controller load as 802.11n APs are deployed because the controller does not need to make data-
forwarding decisions.
The vWLAN system supports enterprise features such as guest access, auto-channel and auto-power assignment,
load balancing, and band steering. In addition, BlueProtect endpoint scanning enforces security policies such as
antivirus protection and operating system patch-level enforcement using a pre-authentication Java dissolvable
agent. Bluesocket provides a method of affecting ATF by specifying that all traffic for a certain role (e.g., guest
access) is negatively “biased.” The administrator must experiment with various levels of “negative bias” to find
the one that satisfies the requirements.
The statistical reporting system provides a current snapshot of AP and client statistics. However, it is not possible
for an administrator to select a previous time period and view a dynamic “playback” of individual AP/client
statistics from that time period. It is also not possible for an administrator to view a dynamic “playback” of client
location and individual AP/client statistics during a previous time period.
Cisco Systems
The Cisco Wireless Control System (WCS) has a planning mode that does not have all of the features of the
AirMagnet Planner or the Motorola LANPlanner. However, it is fully integrated into WCS and has enough
features to design a Cisco WLAN and generate a BOM with AP installation instructions. The planner tool will
also automatically place APs on the floor plan according to administrator-specified design criteria (e.g., voice vs.
data design, “safe” vs. “aggressive” design margin, and AP type). After the APs are installed, the administrator
must manually adjust the AP location on the floor plan to correspond to the as-built network.
WCS provides a scalable interface that provides both device and site navigation (see Figure 5). The system
provides support for AP load balancing and band steering (called “band select”). WCS allows administrators to
create configuration templates (e.g., security and wireless attributes) that can be reused when defining a new
WLAN. WCS does not support the provisioning of ATF algorithms, so a Cisco WLAN will provide equal access
to all stations, as per the 802.11 standard. Cisco provides a beamforming solution, ClientLink, that can improve
the received SNR for 802.11gb devices. ClientLink can also reduce airtime consumption because devices with a
high SNR can often transmit at faster speeds. However, ClientLink should not be considered an ATF mechanism
because it does not directly control airtime usage for 802.11gb devices and does not improve received SNR for
802.11n devices.
